Dancing Bear’s 2nd Annual Writing Contest
Now through May 15

The contest is open to third through seventh graders in Frederick County public, private, or home schools. Entrants must write an original story of 500 words or less that incorporates one of these “Story Starter” sentences, written by local award-winning author Edith Hemingway:

  1. As I walked in the door, one of the dolls on the shelf winked at me. Another one waved.
  2. Every night at 6:01, the bears put on their tap shoes and began to dance.
  3. What I wanted most of all was a set of juggling sticks.
  4. The sign on the door said, "Absolutely no batteries allowed in this store." What was I going to do?
  5. She had to find the perfect game for him--one that he might not be able to win.

Entries must be submitted by e-mail (info@dbeartoys.com) by Saturday, May 15.

Hemingway, author of 2009 Parents’ Choice Gold Award winner Road to Tater Hill, will judge the entries, selecting one winner from each grade level and one overall winner. The top writers will receive a gift from Dancing Bear and the opportunity to meet Hemingway at a special awards presentation at the toy store on Friday, June 4, at 7 p.m. Winning stories will be posted on Dancing Bear's website or blog.

  • ways to incorporate movement into play
  • ways to change the rules and modify play to help your child succeed and grow
